Review apartment targeting under Google's housing advertising rules
Inspect apartment campaign geography, demographic settings, and ZIP-code targeting using current Google housing-policy guidance and a clear review record.

Apartment advertising needs a targeting review that recognizes housing as a distinct category. Settings that might appear routine in another campaign can be restricted when an advertisement promotes a home for rent. The relevant review includes the offer, target markets and every applicable audience setting.
Use Google's current housing guidance as a platform reference, then involve the people responsible for the property's legal and advertising obligations. A platform-policy check is one part of the review. It does not certify that an advertisement or leasing process complies with every applicable law.
Confirm that the offer is housing
Start by describing what the advertisement promotes. Google's Housing in personalized advertising includes homes for sale or rental, including apartments, and relevant services enabling those transactions.
Do not infer the category from the advertiser's name alone. Inspect the ad and destination. A property-management business might advertise different offerings, so the actual campaign purpose matters.
Write down the property, campaign, destination and advertised transaction. This short record prevents a reviewer from evaluating a general company page while overlooking the rental offer a visitor actually sees.
Identify the markets where the campaign can serve
Record the countries and locations the campaign targets. Google's cited policy restricts housing targeting in the United States and Canada. In those markets, it disallows specified demographic targeting and ZIP-code targeting.
The same page permits certain other geographic approaches, with conditions. Do not reduce that guidance to a universal radius recipe. Read the current requirements for the location and platform setup you intend to use.
An account with campaigns in several countries needs a review of each relevant campaign. Settings copied from one market are not evidence that the next market has been reviewed.
Inspect actual settings, including exclusions
For the relevant US and Canadian campaigns, review age, gender, parental status, marital-status settings and ZIP-code targeting against the current guidance. A demographic exclusion can matter as much as a positive selection.
Google's FAQs related to the update to the Personalized advertising policy on housing, employment and credit gives additional scope examples and setting details. Use it together with the housing-specific page, not as a reason to apply a generic audience template without inspection.
List the settings as observed. “Default audience” or “same as last month” is not a review finding. Include campaign-level configuration and any relevant lower-level settings or existing exclusions.
A hypothetical review record
Consider an apartment campaign targeting a US city. In this hypothetical example, an operator discovers a ZIP-code selection left from an older campaign template and an age exclusion intended to reduce inquiry volume.
The record should name the campaign and observed settings, explain why they need review under the cited housing policy, and identify the owner authorized to correct them. It should not claim that the platform has approved the campaign merely because the operator found the issue.
A proposed correction needs a concrete preview of the affected settings. After an authorized change, inspect the stored state again and retain the receipt. Review the ad's status separately. A successful settings update does not guarantee that every other policy issue is resolved.
Evaluate lead quality through operational facts
A leasing team can still investigate why inquiries do not progress. Review available inventory, requested timing, response speed, tour confirmation and truthful price information. These questions concern the advertised offering and the service process.
Do not substitute protected-trait assumptions for a lead-quality analysis. A broad phrase such as “ideal renter” can hide criteria the campaign should not use. Keep any leasing qualification process in its approved operational and legal framework.
Our Google Ads Location Targeting: Stop Paying for Clicks From the Wrong Places provides a general diagnostic starting point. Housing restrictions must be checked independently rather than inferred from that general advice.
Make geography changes reviewable
Geographic coverage should reflect the campaign's legitimate offering and applicable rules. Record the business reason for a proposed area, the method used, and how the location settings interact with that choice.
The Google Ads Radius Targeting: ZIPs, Cities, or Distance? explains ordinary geographic mechanics. For apartment campaigns, read those mechanics alongside the current housing conditions. A technique available in the interface is not automatically an appropriate choice for every category.
Avoid drawing neighborhoods on a map based on assumptions about residents. Use a review process that can explain the offering and geographic decision without relying on protected traits.
Handle a policy notice using the actual issue
If Google flags the campaign, read the stated policy and compare it with the recorded offer and settings. Determine whether a correction is required or whether the business has evidence supporting an appeal.
Do not edit wording merely to conceal the campaign's housing nature. Keep the destination truthful and preserve the record of any correction. Our Google Ads Disapproved Ads: Finding and Fixing Them Fast explains how to organize evidence and use the platform's review route.
An appeal is a request for review, not proof of compliance or a promise of reinstatement.
Keep a dated housing-review worksheet
Use a short mobile-readable checklist: offer scope, campaign markets, demographic settings, geographic methods, relevant exclusions, destination, reviewer and next check date. Store screenshots or configuration exports in the approved account-review location, with sensitive information handled appropriately.
Repeat the review when the offering, geography or account structure changes. A dated assessment is more defensible than a permanent badge claiming that targeting is safe.
