Distinguish directions clicks from measured coffee-shop sales
Review coffee-shop local engagement alongside receipts, redemptions, and carefully defined comparisons without counting directions as purchases.

A directions click tells you that somebody requested a route. It does not establish that they arrived, bought a drink, or would not have visited without the advertisement. A coffee shop can still use this signal, but it should keep local engagement separate from sales evidence.
Build a report that names each observed action accurately. Then choose a practical way to evaluate purchases without pretending the available data can identify every visit. This lets a small shop make useful decisions while preserving the difference between interest, transactions and causal advertising effect.
Know what the local action represents
Google's About local actions conversions describes engagements such as calls and direction requests. These are not the same event as a completed payment at the counter.
Inspect the action's definition and the reporting period before comparing it with receipts. Someone may request directions and visit later. They may also change plans, find the shop closed, or purchase at another branch.
A report should say “directions requests” when that is what it contains. Renaming the column “customers” makes the arithmetic look simpler while introducing a claim the evidence does not support.
Separate three evidence levels
Use three plainly named groups. Local engagement includes actions such as direction requests or calls. Purchase evidence includes reconciled payments or an appropriate redemption record. Incremental sales evidence requires a design that evaluates what would have happened without the campaign.
A small shop may have only the first two levels. That is a measurement limitation, not a reason to manufacture certainty.
Our Google Ads Primary vs Secondary Conversions: Decide What Bidding Should Value explains how account goals can use different actions. Review the actual goals before assuming a diagnostic engagement is observation-only.
A hypothetical local report
Suppose a shop spends $210 over a week. In this hypothetical example, Google reports 70 directions requests and the shop records 280 receipts during the same week.
Cost per directions request is $3. It would be incorrect to divide spend by 70 and call the result customer acquisition cost. It would also be incorrect to attribute all 280 receipts to the campaign merely because the dates overlap.
If ten receipts include a campaign-specific redemption under a consistent approved process, the shop has ten observable redemptions. The advertising cost per observed redemption is $21. That still does not capture every influenced purchase or prove each redemption was incremental.
The useful report lists these figures separately and explains the gaps.
Choose a purchase measurement method that fits the shop
A shop may use a genuine offer redemption, an authorized first-party order flow, or aggregated POS comparisons. Choose a method that staff can apply without slowing service or encouraging unnecessary collection of personal information.
A redemption code needs clear conditions and a way to record it consistently. Do not create a discount purely to make attribution easy without considering its contribution cost. A code can change purchasing behavior, so its results describe that particular offer.
For aggregate receipt comparisons, record comparable opening hours, unusual events, weather where relevant and changes to the menu or price. These observations help interpretation but do not remove every confounder.
Inspect the journey after the directions click
Verify the location, opening hours, map destination and offer information. Check whether the advertisement promotes a product that is available at that location and time.
A visitor who follows accurate directions to a closed shop has experienced a business-information problem. More ad impressions will not resolve it. Keep local information maintained by a responsible person and record when it was checked.
The Google Ads Location Reports: Read Where Performance Actually Came From can help review campaign geography, while the shop's operational record establishes whether the destination fulfilled the promise.
Review campaign goals carefully
Google's About primary and secondary conversion actions explains the ordinary distinction and the custom-goal exception. Inspect both the action settings and the goals selected by the campaign.
A directions action may be useful for a specific campaign purpose. The problem is not its existence; the problem is reporting it as a sale or letting it influence bidding without understanding the intended outcome.
Any proposed goal change needs reliable evidence and the account owner's approval. Do not change conversion settings, budget and creative together and then assume the result identifies which change mattered.
Create a readable owner worksheet
Use four mobile-friendly cards: campaign spend, local engagements, observed purchases, and measurement limits. Include dates, action definitions and any offer conditions.
Ask the team:
- Is the location and advertised availability accurate?
- Which actions are actually observed?
- Which receipts can be reconciled under the chosen method?
- What purchases remain unlinked?
- What decision would the evidence support?
A missing link should stay visible. It is better to report an unknown source than to allocate every receipt to whichever campaign ran most recently.
Decide on the next useful test
If local actions rise without corresponding purchase evidence, inspect the destination and measurement before concluding the creative failed. If purchases rise during a promotion, consider the offer's margin and other contemporaneous changes.
The Google Ads Experiments: Test Changes Without Guessing can help structure a defined comparison where the account and sample support it. Small samples may produce inconclusive results.
Explore current AdvisorPPC plans and bring this worksheet to a review. A useful recommendation should name the observed evidence, the uncertainty and the next decision, rather than describing direction requests as guaranteed sales.
