Five Signs Bots Are Clicking Your Search Ads

Five checks for bots on your search ads: click timing, partner sites, odd locations, repeat IP addresses, and the invalid clicks column. Here is what each check means and what to do next.

Black beads pass through perforated filter plates, with rejected beads dropping into trays and others continuing on a green track.

Your search campaign has a burst of clicks, but the phone and lead inbox stay quiet. Before calling it bots clicking your search ads, check timing, partner sites, locations, repeat addresses, and the invalid clicks column. Google filters invalid clicks before billing and can credit later finds.

This is for the owner paying for search campaigns who sees clicks that never become calls or forms. After reading, you will be able to run five checks, tell a setting from a bot pattern, and choose when an IP exclusion or a review request comes next.

What click patterns suggest bots are clicking your search ads?

A click pattern is the timing, repeat rate, and query mix on your search ads. Bots clicking your search ads are automated tools that click without genuine interest in your offer. An invalid click is a click that does not represent genuine interest in your business. Google's Invalid clicks: Definition names three kinds.

Accidental clicks come from poor ad placement. Automated traffic comes from bots or other deceptive software. Manual clicks are meant to raise your cost or a publisher's profit. You are not charged for invalid clicks or impressions.

When a click is ruled invalid, Google filters it from campaign metrics and from billing. A later find can become a credit on a later invoice, where appropriate and possible. A tight burst, or the same query many times, is a reason to look, not proof. A person can double-click by accident.

Compare that spike with the invalid clicks column before you call it bots.

Read the evidence each check can establish before labeling traffic as fraud.

  • Sort one campaign by hour and mark bursts outside call hours.
  • Read the queries on that spike before you blame bots.
  • Compare the same dates with the invalid clicks column.

The common mistake is to call every non-converting click a bot. Read invalid clicks for what Google removes, and use the Search Terms report when the query is real but wrong for you, such as a job or a how-to. A fraud label does not block that query.

Which partner placements look wrong on a search campaign?

A placement anomaly is a search click on a partner site you did not choose. The Search Partner Network is the set of search sites, outside Google Search, where a Search campaign can still show. About Search Partner Network full placement reporting says the report lists each site where your Search, Shopping, and App ads ran, plus impressions on that site. Open Report editor, then When and where ads showed, then Content suitability.

A site appears only after at least 5 impressions, at least one click, at least one video view, or at least one conversion in your date range. A spike on one unfamiliar hostname, with impressions and almost no leads, is the row to read. It shows your ads appeared on that site, rather than proving how much you spent there. Split Google Search from Search partners, or a blended total hides which network spent the money.

  • Segment Google Search and Search partners into separate rows.
  • Open the placement report for those dates.
  • Mark an unfamiliar hostname with impressions, then investigate lead quality separately.

Exclude placements at the account level for a hostname you will not fund. Since March 2024 those exclusions also cover the Search partner network, and they typically take effect within 12 hours. Leave off www. A subdomain block does not apply on that network, and a Google domain cannot be excluded.

See Search Partners if the whole network should be off.

When is an out-of-area click a setting, not a bot?

A location anomaly is a click that looks as if it came from outside the places you serve. On search ads it is often a setting, not a bot. Prevent clicks outside of your geo-targeted locations says the default target is people in, regularly in, or who have shown interest in your included locations. Ads can reach people likely to be there and people who showed interest in the place.

Select Presence when you want people likely to be in, or regularly in, those locations. If you target a country, the ad may still show on that country's Google domain even when the IP address is outside the area. Target every region instead of the country name, and ads will not show to people whose IP addresses resolve only at country level. If many clicks sit outside your places, put the place in the ad.

Google's example changes coffee shop to Boston coffee shop, which reduces clicks from people who are not there and not interested.

  • Write down Presence or the default interest setting.
  • Confirm the ad names the city you serve.
  • Add that city to the ad before you exclude a region.

Do not cut a state over a few odd pins. About advanced location options says the default Presence or Interest setting reaches more people than Presence alone. Read location targeting mistakes before a wide block.

How do IP exclusions limit repeat clicks on search ads?

An IP exclusion is a block that keeps your ads off computers and networks whose addresses you list. An IP address is the network address of a computer or a shared connection. Exclude IP addresses says you can exclude up to 500 IP addresses per campaign. Enter one address, or replace the last 3 digits with an asterisk to block a range.

Account and campaign lists are merged, so an address on either list is blocked for that campaign. Edit the account list under Admin, Account settings, IP exclusions. The campaign list sits under Additional settings. Campaign-level exclusions are not available for video, hotel, App, Performance Max, or Smart Display campaigns.

If the problem is a place, exclude the location instead of guessing addresses. Google's example is the office, where staff search the company name and click the ad by habit. Enter every version of an address, because one network can appear in more than one form.

  • Start with a network you control, such as the office.
  • Use the account list when every campaign should skip it.
  • Exclude a location when the issue is a place, not a network.

An excluded address can still show in a web log. Why do I get clicks from excluded IP addresses? says the provider may change the address between the search and the click, and some sites never send one. Google cannot promise zero clicks from a listed address, and those clicks can remain in normal stats.

What does the invalid clicks column already remove?

The invalid clicks column is the count of clicks Google already filtered from your search campaigns. About invalid traffic says you add it from the Columns icon on the campaigns table. Those clicks were filtered as they happened or shortly after, and you are not charged for them. A higher number means more interactions left Clicks, Cost, and the bill.

There is no standard invalid-traffic rate, so a percent alone proves nothing. Credits are a separate pile. If Google finds invalid traffic after the invoice, it can post an Invalid activity adjustment, where appropriate and possible. Campaign numbers freeze at month end, so that credit does not rewrite the columns.

The Invalid Activity Credit Report, in Report editor, shows adjusted clicks, cost, and conversion rate. A large column beside a small credit is normal. The filter ran before the bill. Third-party tools often flag clicks Google has already taken off the invoice.

  • Add the Invalid clicks column on the campaigns table.
  • Open Invalid activity under billing Adjustments.
  • Do not subtract the column from cost a second time.

Do not price a third-party bot file as money saved. Invalid clicks: Definition notes a rare case of more conversions than clicks: the click is filtered later and the valid conversion stays. Other leaks are covered in where wasted spend hides.

When should you add protection beyond Google's filters?

Extra protection is a step past the filters Google already runs on search ads. About invalid traffic says you can request an invalid traffic investigation of the past 60 days if you suspect clicks that were not filtered. Prepare the exact dates, repetitive IP addresses, device information and relevant campaign details. Include server logs or lead evidence only as your privacy policy allows.

Reviewers will not say if one click was marked valid or invalid. Google's filters can still leave that traffic reaching your website and lead forms. A spike is not automatically invalid. A higher budget, new keywords, or changed audience and location settings can raise clicks.

Read change history before you assume fraud. Ask for the review only when the pattern remains and the invalid clicks column does not already explain it.

  1. Check change history for a budget, keyword, or location edit.
  2. See whether the invalid clicks column already covers the spike.
  3. If it does not, prepare the past 60 days for the Click Quality Form.
  4. Add reCAPTCHA on the form.

Do not turn a blocker on in the first bad week. Why do I get clicks from excluded IP addresses? says Google filters invalid clicks on its own, and you do not have to do anything to receive that protection. Run the click protection checklist before a rule can turn a real buyer away.

Ask for a read-only review of search terms, campaign settings and invalid-click reporting before proposing exclusions.

Does a high invalid clicks number mean I paid for bots?

No: the column is clicks Google already filtered. You are not charged for them. A later credit is a separate Invalid activity line.

Should I block every address that did not convert?

No. Many people can share one public address. Exclude a network you control, such as your office.

How far back can Google review suspicious clicks?

You can ask about the past 60 days. Google will not tell you the mark on one specific click.
