Choose the outcome you want

A conversion action records a customer activity you choose to measure, such as a call, submitted form or purchase. Start by naming the business outcome in plain words. For a lead business, consider whether a completed enquiry is a better signal than a page view. That choice is a business judgement to review with the owner. Write down how you would compare the chosen signal with actual enquiries or sales before treating the account total as success.

Check what bidding uses

Primary actions are normally used for bidding when their standard goal is selected by the campaign. Secondary actions are normally for observation in All conversions. There is an important exception: actions in a custom goal can be used for bidding regardless of their primary or secondary label. Inspect the campaign's goal setup as well as each action. Do not assume that a secondary label alone proves an event cannot affect bidding in that campaign.

Investigate duplicate outcomes

Separate measurement paths can describe the same business event. For example, compare a website conversion action with an imported analytics event before treating their combined total as distinct customers. Google's transaction-ID guidance explains how repeated purchase events can be deduplicated within a conversion action. It does not mean unrelated actions are automatically deduplicated against each other. Use a test submission and your own records to investigate what fires, then draft a correction for review.

Review consent with your implementation

Google's EEA guidance requires consent choices to be collected and shared for applicable measurement and advertising uses. Its EU user consent policy also covers the UK and Switzerland where applicable. Consent mode adjusts tag behaviour to reflect those choices; it does not obtain consent for you. Use Google's own requirements as the starting point when reviewing the implementation. Ask the responsible developer or privacy adviser to assess your particular setup.

Check health before optimising

Before interpreting a fall in recorded conversions as weaker demand, check whether the intended event is still being measured. Review the conversion diagnostics, recent site edits and the business's own enquiry or sales records for a comparable period. This is a practical investigation checklist, not a promise that every discrepancy is a broken tag. Record what is confirmed and what still needs testing, then put any proposed tracking change through the normal approval process.

Worked example

Example account: the same contact form is counted by two primary actions. Forty real enquiries appear as eighty recorded conversions. These invented figures illustrate duplicate measurement, rather than a measured result from AdvisorPPC. Review the action names, sources, goal settings and the form's actual behaviour. Ask for a tracking-health review that explains any suspected overlap. Keep the proposed fix as a draft for the responsible person to check. After an approved correction, compare new enquiries with the records again before making a bidding decision.

Try it in your account

Connect your account first. Review the answer before deciding what to change.

Check my conversion tracking health: which actions are primary, which are receiving events, and could any count the same outcome? Check campaign goals too. Explain the evidence and draft any fixes for review; do not apply changes.

Before you move on

  • Name the real business outcome behind each bidding goal.
  • Review duplicate events, diagnostics and consent before changing bids.
